In the spring of 824 CE, by the shores of West Lake, Bai Juyi took up his brush and penned “Spring by the Lake”—a poem that captures the intoxicating beauty where water mirrors mountain, and mountain embraces water. Now, this timeless grace—steeped in poetry for a millennium—flows once more. With tea as its muse, nestled along West Lake’s southern shore, Zhejiang Xizi Hotel’s Xiyuan Teahouse weaves its delicate fragrance into Hangzhou’s unhurried rhythms.
Zhejiang Xizi Hotel, formerly known as Wang Villa, traces its origins to the Wang Yutai Tea House established in 1927. As one of West Lake’s Four Great Historic Gardens, this hallowed ground lies beneath Leifeng Pagoda, spanning 290 acres with three sides embraced by the lake and a 1,500-meter shoreline. Here, the design inherits the literati tradition of the Wang family’s “West Lake Moonlight Gatherings”, transforming the classical arts of zither and tea into a contemporary expression of Oriental aesthetics. Whether sipping tea by the lakeside or boating to seek the perfect brew, time becomes profound precisely through its unhurried purposelessness.

“Oriental Aesthetics: Where words end, but meaning lingers.” Guided by this philosophy, the design distills Eastern essence into contemporary form. The two-story pavilion commands attention—its sloped roof whispering a millennium of refined taste, while celadon-green walls, with understated elegance, mirror emerald hills and tea leaves into the spatial tapestry.

In the entrance hall, a tea-leaf patterned screen floats with translucent light, while octagonal windows embrace the energy of all directions. The verdant-stained wood grain unfolds like the first unfurling veins of Longjing tea leaves beneath water, enveloping the space in poetic mist.

The elevated tea platform constructs a spatial rhythm through geometric volumes. The textured cedar wood grain mimics the brushstrokes of traditional mountain-and-water ink paintings, weaving nature’s breath into every tactile surface.

Floor-to-ceiling windows frame West Lake’s four seasons into a three-dimensional scroll. With every step, sip of tea, or gathering conversation, the lake and mountains unfurl like an ink painting. As sightlines follow the winding corridor, a clear pool murmurs gently. Amidst shimmering reflections, the jagged silhouette of a Taihu rock stands poised—capturing the essence of distant peaks and intimate waters, silently echoing the dialogue between interior artistry and the landscape beyond.

Elegant Room · Depth of Field
West Lake Spring, symbolizes the beginning of all things beautiful—a state of vibrant vitality. In the eight-seat tearoom named after this theme, an elongated tea table rests like an unfurled ink-wash scroll. Here, tea drinkers are transported into nature itself: sunlight dapples through leaves, casting a dance of shadows across the room, while a lake-view screen evokes the sentiment—”Within this tea sanctuary, worldly clamor fades; half a day’s leisure is surrendered entirely to spring’s embrace.”

Through the corridor dappled with interplaying light and shadow, the tatami-style Melody Pavilion comes into view. Its full-height south-facing glass wall acts as a natural picture frame, seamlessly blending the hotel’s landscaped gardens into the interior space.

The teahouse’s most exquisite private chamber for two is named Heart. Though compact in size, this space holds boundless poetic resonance.

The sculptural staircase stands as a masterstroke of design. With its antique bronze spiral form and inlaid emerald-green wooden handrail, it coils upward like a jade serpent—crowned by a suspended spherical lantern to compose the Oriental motif of “A Celestial Serpent Dancing with a Pearl.” This evokes legendary associations with the tales of Leifeng Pagoda.

Stepping into the eight-person VIP chamber – Green Pavilion, one encounters six floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that allow the space to breathe between openness and seclusion. Inside, the back-to-back sofas, square coffee tables, and round tea tables deconstruct traditional symmetrical layouts, creating a rhythm of their own. Gazing outward, cascading greenery spills through the windows as if nature itself has taken root indoors.

“From a narrow corridor, you enter the eight-person jade pavilion. A square table for four and a twin sofa enclose a multifunctional space for chess/card games and tea gatherings. Gazing out the window, layers of lush greenery and staggered trees frame the view, with distant mountains and pavilions facing each other across the scenery—a vibrant panorama of infinite vitality.”

Nestled among ancient trees, the outdoor terrace gazes across the lake. In the gentle seasons of spring and autumn, when the air is perfectly tempered, one may sip tea while admiring the view—where glimpses of Leifeng Pagoda flicker through the branches, adding a whisper of Zen to the moment.

The East in Reflection
A dialogue with Oriental aesthetics, a poetic transcription of nature’s seasons, and an etching of cultural pursuits together weave the narrative tapestry of tea-centric living. At Zhejiang Xizi Hotel’s Xiyuan Teahouse, the design excavates connections between Eastern heritage and contemporary sensibility—allowing the artistic pursuits and refined tastes of classical literati life to be reinterpreted and revitalized for the modern era.

Between the city’s humming pulse and the lakeside murmur of pine and wind, time slips into a gentler cadence. Here, tea and humanity exist in effortless symbiosis—where the space’s Eastern poetics intertwine with collective memory, their harmony plucking the strings of Hangzhou’s timeless elegance, inscribing another verse in its millennium-old ode to refinement.
