Chongqing is a city where art reveals in the rivers, hot & spicy flavors, flights of steps and skyscrapers …So much so that when we were awarded the project of Raffles, we and the owner coincidentally came up with the innovative idea of “bringing art to the cloud”: standing on the shoulders of the city landmark, we would build an art exhibition space – The Cloud Art Gallery, which would bring the world culture closer to the general public.

We let space and art dance together in the sky, and let Chaotianmen, clad in a thousand years of history and centuries of glory, enter the hall of human art with the label of modernism given by Raffles, and shine in the very central and highest part of the city!

The world’s highest art gallery, providing a wander in the clouds
It originates from the intersection where the two rivers meet in the city… This landscape is the sanctuary of art. This case is located on the 72-73 floor of T3 Chaotiange in Raffles, Chaotianmen, nearly 350 meters high in the cloud. It is nearly double the height of the Mori Arts Museum on the 53rd floor of Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo, which claims to be the world’s tallest Museum. The project has already set a new record. As you are enjoying the scenery in the 350 meters high gallery, from the both sides of the two rivers people are watching you.
Stepping in front of the window, we can have a panoramic view of the attractive landscape of the whole Chongqing – the busy boats passing slowly along the two rivers; the subway, speeding on the river bridge, running into the underground maze; the flow of traffic on Nanbin Road winding away as if there is no end to it; the steaming white smoke, rising from the Nanshan Mountain in the distance, drifting freely… The whole city is a flowing work of art, on display right under our noses at all time.

Minimalist aesthetics, restructuring the box holding the art
The Raffles Cloud Art Gallery is divided into two floors with a total area of around 1000㎡.

In the middle of the gallery, a black sculptural staircase shaped like a streamer is set up to link the 72nd and 73rd floors, perfecting the route of people’s movements and at the same time separating the space. The building envelope is a steel structure with irregular and double inclined planes, and there are all windows adopted between the structure columns, thus the space has the benefit of abundant natural light. The framework divides the city view outside the window into vivid urban landscapes. In these pictures, there are days and nights, cloudy and sunny, you and me… A great deal of work goes into the arrangement and layout of the structure and window frames, so that it provides a unique feeling both in glass blocks and sequence of these windows. In front of each window, what comes into sight is only the fine painting, and the painting frame tends to be forgotten.

There are five inclusive, interconnected and relatively independent exhibition halls facing the river. Except them, storage room, cloakroom, banquet hall, VIP reception room and other functional spaces are also designed for the gallery. Apart from satisfying the requirement on its function and structure, blank-leaving is the most straightforward design language of Raffles Cloud Art Gallery – removing cumbersome designs to give the purest space for exhibition.

As a ” container of arts”, the inner of the space should be a “pure” existence. Being exhibited in the space, all the pieces of “Modern Art” would release their artistic conception and aesthetic connotation naturally and show vitality and enthusiasm without any doubt. On the other hand, the urban base and the two flowing rivers will give the gallery external vitality, allowing the minimalist space and artistic heritage to grow naturally.

Gathering light from different angles, making art shine brightly
The use of light and shadow in Raffles Cloud Art Gallery has been played to the extreme. Thanks to the uninterrupted daylighting at a height of 350 meters, there is always a natural halo around the gallery. Viewing from the outside of the space, the clouds, the sunset and the sky are reproduced from a new angle, and the objects in the intersection of light and shadow are overlapped into a flowing scenery, reconstructing the plane space relationship and forming the fancy image of “Picture in Picture”, thus extending the perception of art to another dimension.

The physical boundary of the building itself is dissolved in the free expression of light and shadow, and gradually becomes inconspicuous in the overall space. The harmony between people, architecture and the open space for art is infinitely enlarged. The vitality in the morning, the shining and brightness at noon and the tenderness in the evening all fall into this “rectangular box” across the sky. With the sight reaching the sky through the floor-to-ceiling window, the consciousness of the viewers lingers between the artwork and the urban background. With people moving in the space, light and shadow change with time, and the different shades of shadow cast by their overlap, all of these made up a real art between nature and viewer interaction.

Linking the world and the future, closing the distance between people and art
Rabindranath Tagore once said, “Where the wand of art touches, it becomes immortal reality.” Art is not an isolated island away from the masses, nor should it be an unattainable temple! It is right within our reach! Chongqing Raffles Cloud Art Gallery is a place to closely experience the art and cultural charm when wandering in the clouds. It is certain that this exhibition space will bring a refreshing feeling to everyone.
