Running by a group of cross-culture young people from New York and Beijing, the brand itself insists on the mission of environmental sustainability, which is compatible with the field ATLAS persist practice on. The collaboration constitutes a sense of lightness as a whole. Therefore, we design the space and display system from recycle materials under the shared vision of “Seeds and Cycling” .

The naturalistic literature, which prevailed in the 19th century, advocating truth, was once regarded as the highest principle of modern fiction and the best character of modern novelists. Naturalism is known for its direct observation and exquisite analysis, integrating the attitude of scientists and the methods of writers, it pays attention back to life, to reality, and to human beings, thereby found the nature of things.

On the first floor, the basic tone is laid by the washed stone ground, while the white texture surface makes people place themselves in an outdoor scene like enclosed courtyard. The interior and exterior blurring eliminates the boundary of things, so the space emerges like a dreamy character. Irregularly curved walls, as a specific strategy for space recreation, increase a sense of clarity and lightness. The curved wall looks like a huge curtain that being stretched, waiting for the show to begin. The gradient stained wood staircases along with the curly leaf vein-like handrails try to lead visitor’s sight into the depth of the mezzanine space., as if it is a secret path to the salon host’s heart.

At the corner of the staircases in the attic a niches is inlaid with small gravel flowers for highlighted product display. The second floor is mainly for display of jewelry and selected clothing. The whole space is inspired by the desert house of Georgia O’Keeffe, a legendary woman who had been painting alone in the “vast desert” all year around, presented microscopic texture changes of flowers, rocks, conch, animal bones as subjects.

When entering a place is like looking inside to a person’s inner world, it is a slow and pleasant process passing through the conversation between physical space and furniture. Time, location, air flow, tone, skin touch, smell , temperature, weight of sights, more or less, will have an impact. This place has a leisurely, quiet, and relaxed quality, which allows city dwellers feel free to linger in the natural scenery and fully enjoy the beauty of space, light and creations. As Georgia O’Keeffe herself puts it, “People in big cities are always in a hurry, and don’t have one minute to stop to admire a flower; but once you look closely at the flower in your hand, it blossoms your world”.

Recycling Construction

For architects, using one material instead of another is based on the intellectual understanding and emotional cognition of yearly practice. A layer of shells embedded in the washed stone floor was originally discarded scraps from the button industry. Natural materials were brought into construction to achieve an elegant quality with their splendor texture when the handicrafts are lost increasingly in our society. Transition from the washed stone floor to the micro-cement wall, the LED lighting system arranged along the curved surface further softens the indoor atmosphere. As well as the curved chamfer creates a comfortable space experience. The soft personality of the place is fully visible and sensible in the overlapping of materials and lights.

If slenderness means precision, the warm cork wall and the soft fabric installation neutralize sharpness leaving tenderness and tolerance, the same as the brand mission. The seed wall on second floor inlaid with by cork panels bold the main vision of the brand, connecting the dressing room, the makeup room, and the VIP room, models the spiritual seed core for the brand. Recycled wooden floors from old houses are reused within the space corresponds to the low-carbon spirit. The language of human, tradition, and nature are simultaneously weaved in more intuitive modernity.

Seeds, Seeding

Kvadrat has been dedicated to exploring new ideas in design and manufacturing. The fabrics produced by one are extremely tactile and durable. This time, we tried Kvadrat’s new eco-friendly material Really Board to create a set of lotus root-shaped display stands, all of which are pressed entirely from recycled fabrics. The textile samples eliminated by Kvadrat showroom were  made into a mobile changing room. The patchwork sculpture is constructed from more than 100 pieces of 30X 60cm samples, and the color follows the gradient color of different plant seeds. The closure buttons of this changing room are three bodhi seeds. Through the redesign of contemporary interpretation, the former serves as ornaments in the space, adding vitality; the latter divides the space with rich and bright color sculpture figure in along the path.

The window on the second floor was originally facing another building. We set up an ART WINDOW here to display works related to nature. This consciously line-of-sight processing exploration ensure the simplicity and consistency of the spatial quality. In order to reduce the production of new furniture, the space reclaimed old furniture as movable display furniture another reality aged objects reference frame, to give a landscape reference that transcends time and space. Imagine the echo between the indoor space and the natural environment outside the window.

Space Design for Community and Sustainable

Community is not just about who we hang out with, but it means how to build relationship between each others. In response to climate change and ecological pollution, global consumers are practicing sustainable living and holding green ideas in their own ways. This brings new opportunities for brand to participate in the current ecological reshaping. The brand itself runs a luxury resale business, hoping that recycling will become a norm our life. We continue this thinking into the design. In 1987, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development described the concept of “sustainable development” for the first time in its report “Our Common Future”. People realized the importance of protecting the natural environment for the well-being of future generations. The 5R principles of sustainable design (Revalue, Renew, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) emphasize the social responsibility and ethical value of designers, which put forward a clear program. Therefore, we are willing to make more experimental attempts at how to build local sustainable retail space, and create a gallery-like store in the core business district both to show and respond to this natural organic life. Encouraging communities and cities to participate in sustainability issues together through creative design; using renewable materials or developing new energy technologies to deal with resource shortages; adhering the concept of sustainability to shape people’s behavior and willingness with the environment. This is a new interactive offline retail space represents open, incubation, connection and responsibility from functional and experiential all the way through.

Social media has expanded the communication function of architecture but the process of practices is always accompanied by difficulties and challenges. When the brand introduced its concept, it said every plant can germinate again in every seed of its own. We hope that our work will also bring the awareness of sustainability back to everyone’s daily life cycle.
