This is a conventional flat-floor apartment with a clearly defined original layout. Three windows of varying sizes on the south side overlook the central garden view. In this project, Uni-x Associates sought to unlock the living space’s untapped potential, redefining functions and boundaries while incorporating the client’s feng shui considerations. The open floor plan aims to break conventional spatial experiences, infusing a sense of freedom and exploratory charm while fulfilling the family’s daily functional needs.

The curved bookshelves seamlessly connect the physical boundaries of the communal space, with two large shelving units enclosing relatively independent functional zones. Through strategic openings and cantilevered sections, the spaces engage in a visual dialogue. Serving as both the design’s starting point and visual focal point, the bookshelf wall adopts a flexible, open posture—capable of both separation and integration—embodying diverse aspirations for future living.

介入
Intervention

The construction and dissolution of boundaries form the foundation of spatial experience. The design preserves the original structure and functional zoning while removing lightweight partitions in public areas, replacing them with a curved bookshelf wall. This serves as both a divider and a cleverly integrated doorway. Two sets of bookshelves gradually widen from south to north, guiding light deep into the interior and maximizing the sense of spatial openness.

Within the “canyon” between the bookshelves, the living room, dining area, and kitchen are arranged in an orderly fashion, with furniture seemingly scattered naturally throughout. Openings carved into the “canyon” serve as passageways connecting different zones, guiding the flow of sightlines. While creating barriers, they maintain visual continuity, blurring boundaries and generating tension. Under the guidance of the curved forms, light and views shift with angles, transforming the space into a medium for light. The three south-facing functional areas, separated by the bookshelves, remain visually connected and responsive to each other.

感知
Perception

The atmosphere of a space stems from perception, its function depends on utility, and its beauty is shaped by form.

Horizontal expansions create rich visual connections between distinct spatial units. To achieve a sense of openness within the limited area, the designer minimized visual barriers and elongated sightlines—enabling interaction from the entryway to the kitchen, and even to the study at the far diagonal end. The boundaries perceived by the mind extend far beyond physical limitations.

As a living space, essential zoning remains intact. The bookshelf wall integrated with recessed doors preserves freedom for solitude and interaction. Sliding doors, hinged doors, and corridors collectively serve as mediators between public and private spheres. The living room’s furniture layout enhances social possibilities, while three-directional views amplify spatial tension.

When the study’s sliding door opens, one steps from the “canyon-like book gallery” into a secluded reading nook—a sanctuary for quiet contemplation and sunset viewing. The large desk accommodates both home office tasks and leisure reading, while a lounge chair positioned by the curved floor-to-ceiling window frames the lotus pond bathed in evening light, offering dual sensory and spiritual delight.

The master bedroom connects via a short corridor, offering compact yet complete functionality. The birch-paneled master bathroom radiates warmth under natural or artificial light. Between the children’s room and the public area bookshelves, vertical light-permeable treatments ensure privacy while softening the transition, adding depth and playfulness. Following feng shui principles, the owners converted the original living room into a children’s room—a gesture reflecting the father’s profound affection for his daughter.

体验
Experience

The spaces interconnect in multiple ways, with deliberate visual gaps preserved between zones. The eye continually captures new information—without needing to move, the gaze begins its journey. Thus, the walking paths, the relationship between seeing and being seen, the viewing angles, and the corners where one pauses all reveal a rich sense of layering.

This is a residential practice inspired by the concept of “a library within a home.” Regarding experience, we firmly believe in respecting each resident’s lifestyle. Design language may fade with time, but when trends recede, only memories fill the core of a home. Everything this curved bookshelf can hold—we leave it all to time.
