Bird observing and reaching for the stars

上海临港，星空之境海绵公园内，湿地北侧的“同观廊”驿站一组三件，还包括一座塔和一道桥

In the northern bank of the wetland of Starry Sky Sponge Park in Lin-gang Special Area of Shanghai, the three-in-one Tong Guan Stage service station includes a stage, a tower and a bridge.

驿站取名“同观”，意在观星、观鸟、观湿地，同观共享；塔名“旋星”，是公园里的制高点，可登高远眺公园全景，桥名“羽旋”，通体白色，意求鸟羽般轻巧——“旋”字，暗示了这组建/构筑物共有的形体特点。

The stage is named “Tong Guan”, which means “watch together”, inviting people to gaze at the stars, watch the birds, and enjoy the view of the wetland together with their loved ones all at this very veranda; the only high point in the park is the observatory tower, whose Chinese name “Xuan Xing” that means “rotating stars”, depicts the motion of the stars; “Yu Xuan”, which means “rotating feather”, is the name of the bridge, suggesting the form of the bridge is light as bird-feather. The word “Xuan”, which means “rotate” in English, implies the common physical characteristics of this group of architectural/structural pieces.

同观廊
Tong Guan Stage

同观廊布局既临湿地，索性把建设用地也改成湿地，再为公园的生态多一点贡献。这样驿站就变成架在湿地上一组房子，将几种预设的功能（餐厅、茶室、展览、公共卫生间等）在布局上打散，在空间上对位，令建筑四面开窍，八面来风，充分融入湿地周边的小气候环境。

Since Tong Guan Stage is adjacent to the wetland area, we decided to convert the construction site into a wetland as well, connecting to the existing one and enlarging the ecological system services provided by the park. The stage consists of a group of bungalows over the wetland. Facilities integrated within the stage include a bird-watching restaurant, a teahouse, an exhibition room, a stargazing supplies store, and public toilets. The scattered allocation contributes to the ventilation across the buildings and blends the stage into the micro wetland environment around.

考虑到观鸟、观星等不同时段的活动，将所有外廊联通并直达屋顶观景台，让游客在闭店之后也能到达各处全天候畅游。

To better accommodate activities taking place in different times of the day, all the exterior corridors are connected and lead to the rooftop observation deck, allowing visitors to enjoy the stage even before and after the closing time.

面对林木疏朗池面旷阔的湿地，建筑体量尽可能拉长水平展开，匍匐在大地上，并提供尽可能长的观鸟廊（公共）与观鸟餐厅视野。内院则用一道贯通首尾的弧形墙面收拢视线，令观者聚焦于内庭的一池鸢尾。

Facing the open wetland and the sparse forest, the volume of the Stage spreads out horizontally, crawling over the wetland and providing the longest possible bird-watching veranda (public) and a bird-watching restaurant with the widest possible view. In the inner courtyard, a continuous curved wall guides visitors’ sightlines to a pond of irises in the inner wetland.

旋星塔
Xuan Xing Tower

对星空的凝望与遐想是人的天性。在海绵公园开阔的夜空背景前，清水混凝土材质的旋星塔如一只突兀冷峻的巨石之眼安静凝望，不动如峰。

It is human nature to gaze and daydream about the starry sky. In front of the open night sky background of Sponge Park, the Xuan Xing Tower made of fair-faced concrete gazes at the starry sky quietly like an abrupt yet calm boulder eye, stilly and firmly like a peak.

旋星塔定性为观测用构筑物，原本不对公众开放，因此有苛刻的面积与造价限制。但我们还是为仅六米见方的观测塔设计了楼梯。

The Xuan Xing Tower is a structure designed for observational use and was originally closed to the public. Therefore, it has strict limits on area and cost. Nevertheless, we designed a staircase for the 6 meters square observation tower.

塔体造型力求简洁，中部对开尖榄型洞，构成了星云型的空间曲面——这给楼梯的登顶带来了不少麻烦，但也带来了横穿“眼眸”鸟瞰公园的机会——这个立体景框，在繁星满天时随观者的移动可以有不同的视域。塔体另外两面墙体当中开有通缝，为楼梯提供了天然通风采光，也使塔体更为挺拔。

The form of the tower is kept simple and clear. An olive-shaped hole in the middle part of the tower forms a nebulous spatial surface, which creates some obstacles to the up-climbing process, but also provides a rare opportunity for enjoying the avian view of the park. The three-dimensional view frame displays different scenes as the viewer moves around under the sky full of stars. There are slits in the other two walls of the tower, which provide natural ventilation and lighting for the stairs, making the tower taller and slimer.

羽旋桥
Yu Xuan Bridge

此桥跨度超过50米，暴露全部钢结构不做外装饰板，通体全白，这使成排的钢肋板获得了一种轻巧的节奏感。桥面平静而桥底激荡——所以风景都在桥下水边。斜梁扭板的要求给结构师带来了不小的麻烦，但也终于依托这一笔空间扭曲达到了对轻盈自由的鸟羽的联想，让坚硬的钢变得很自在。

The bridge stretches over 50 meters, exposing all the steel structure without any exterior decorative panels, all white throughout, which endows the rows of rib steel plates a rhythm of lightness. The bridge deck is calm and ordinary, with simmering tension underneath. That’s the reason why all the beautiful views are seen below the bridge and adjacent to the river. The design of the rotating inclined beams with twisted-shape sections challenged the structural engineers, but the final product is worth all the troubles. This spatial distortion liberates the stiff steel and associates the structure with the light and free bird feathers.

摘·星巴克
Reaching for the Star(s) /bucks

预想中的观鸟餐厅最终变成了星巴克咖啡厅，一个大大的logo高挂在塔顶。26米高的塔会不会是最高的星巴克？没办法考证，但在这个辽阔的公园里，肯定是离Star最近的bucks；大概也是少有的面对一片湿地，能够听风观鸟的Starbucks；说不定还是唯一的鼓励你自助将咖啡端上二层“星巴克主题画廊”的Starbucks，这个游走的过程再一次提示了布局打散八面来风的建筑特征。所以最好的品尝咖啡的季节，一定是在暖阳慵懒、秋林萧疏、芦苇丛密、候鸟翩跹的季节。

The envisioned bird-watching restaurant eventually turned into a Starbucks Cafe, with a large logo hanging high on the top of the tower. Will the 26-meter-tall tower be the tallest Starbucks? There is no way to verify it, but in this vast park, it must be the closest buck to the Star. It is probably also one of the few Starbucks that faces a wetland and can listen to the wind and watch birds. It may also be the only one that encourages you to serve your own coffee up to the “Starbucks Theme Gallery” on the second floor. Once again, the wandering process reminds the visitors of the architectural features of the layout that breaks up the wind coming from all directions. Therefore, the best season to taste coffee here must be the season when the warm sunshine is lazy, the autumn forests are sparse, the reeds are dense, and migratory birds are flying southwards.
