Under the context of the “Qianmen · Chinese Food Fair” promoting cultural-tourism-commercial integration, the “Take a Seat in Qianmen” Chair Project uses public art as a medium to explore the potential of street furniture in activating neighborhood vitality and preserving cultural memory. The two installations, “The Noodle’s Tale” and “Beijing’s Bite,” created by a team from Tsinghua University School of Architecture, extract formal logic from traditional Chinese food, translating culinary imagery into functional and poetic public facilities through lightweight, assemblable construction methods.

“The Noodle’s Tale” — Noodle’s Fluidity and Body Scale
“When we faced the topic of the ‘Chair Project,’ what came to mind was not a piece of furniture, but scenes of people gathering and sharing meals,” the design team remarked in an interview. Consequently, “The Noodle’s Tale” and “Beijing’s Bite” are not conventional seats, but rather defined as “dining spaces” designed to evoke a sense of ritual and belonging around the act of eating together.

“The Noodle’s Tale” draws inspiration from the fluid form of noodles, transforming the everyday act of eating noodles into a public interactive installation that invites sitting, reclining, and exploration. The design employs continuous undulating curves to mimic the supple, dynamic qualities of noodles from preparation to cooking. Through its ergonomically staggered heights, the installation not only displays a noodle-like rhythmic beauty but also organically facilitates diverse resting modes: solitary contemplation, conversational engagement, reclining relaxation, and communal dining.

In terms of material and color, the team selected warm brown wood, resembling the soft texture of cooked noodles, evoking memories and associations with noodle dishes visually and tactilely. “Through bodily participation, the work integrates traditional food culture into contemporary public space, creating a place experience that combines fun, engagement, and the warmth of daily life.” Structurally, the installation uses prefabricated wooden components and a modular assembly system for rapid setup and adjustment. The connections between units are optimized to ensure stability while maintaining the fluidity of the form.

At nightfall, lights illuminate the installation like hearth fires from countless households, echoing Qianmen’s historical prosperity as a bustling merchant area with taverns and entertainment venues, revitalizing the neighborhood’s spirit as a carrier of food culture.

“Beijing’s Bite” — Jiaoquan’s Wholeness and Social Gradient

The main structure of the installation system consists of continuous inflatable air membranes connected to hot-dip galvanized steel pipe columns via flange assemblies. The stainless steel mirrored round tables are suspended at a height of 1100mm, while the column bases employ circular galvanized patterned steel plates. This integrated design fulfills the requirements for rapid deployment and retrieval of temporary public facilities. “Beijing’s Bite” draws inspiration from the traditional Beijing snack Jiaoquan, adopting its circular form to symbolize gathering and sharing. The design transforms this culinary symbol into ring-shaped installations suspended above the streets, creating multi-layered social spaces from intimate to open.

The tabletops, with diameters of 800mm and 1200mm, recreate the “reunion” atmosphere of traditional Chinese round tables—this is also the most suitable social distance for neighborhood interaction. The mirrored stainless steel material reflects the overhead installation on the ground, creating a visually interesting blend of virtual and real.

By day, the air membranes stretch like clouds, offering shade and shelter; by night, colorful lights flow, mimicking the oily sheen of Jiaoquan floating in the darkness, creating a poetic realm where taste and light intertwine.

Conclusion: Immediate Feedback and Recreating the Spirit of Place
The social value of street furniture often lies in its immediacy of use. Unlike buildings that require long-term evaluation, these chairs, from the moment of installation, immediately bear people’s rest, conversations, and laughter. The team could directly observe how the works instantly integrated into and improved daily life, and this immediate, vibrant feedback was quickly incorporated into design refinements.
