An Unexpected Meeting
I live in the southeast of Chengdu. On an Saturday afternoon with sunshine, my friend sent me an invitation to a teahouse. It was said to be very secret and interesting. I was curious about how interesting it would be, which seemed to be only 2.5 kilometers away from me on the map.

Less than a quarter of an hour’s journey, after driving through some paths, I was faced with an old wooden door with tenon and mortise structure that did not belong to this era. “Mom, it’s not like here in Chengdu!” Just behind me came a childish voice, which from my friend’s son, who had the same feelings as me.

Here is the origin of Baran Courtyard gates. The designer and the manager have a common interest in Chinese traditional culture. When they got the courtyard, they went to Shanxi to ask the local experienced worker to dismantle the gates of old houses that they had long liked and transport them to Chengdu. Then they asked the experienced worker to “assemble” them with pieces of tile and wood. Wooden gates were made with tenon and mortise structure commonly used in ancient Chinese architecture, so it is called assembling.

Love Every Object and Love to Express
Across the threshold, what connected visitors with the interior space was a small pool hidden under lush green plants. Turn the corner and take a few steps inward, the general appearance of the house on the right side would fall into my eyes. On the cream colored exterior wall, several large glasses were framed in long strips of wood. There were simple and clean walls, burlywood furniture, transparent doors and windows.

The window on the second floor was covered with curtains, but through the large glass on the first floor, you could get a glimpse of the inside. There were stairs, rooms, and several groups of glass cabinets showing what was mysterious. I couldn’t help walking into the room.

There are many personal collections of the managers in the small courtyard of Baran. Even the tea cups and plates for guests are rare handicrafts.

There were blue and white porcelain tea cups and saucers, gold porcelain bowls that have been reborn in unknown years, and small white porcelain cups with flowers, birds, fish, insects, and landscapes were hand painted. I were excited to see them while someone from the side said that these were all utensils from the Qing Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty, and the Song Dynasty. Then I turned to talk with the voice.

It used to be an ordinary old courtyard, which was hidden at the end of the path. The remodeler just made a real and straightforward expression with unobtrusive way, hiding all enthusiasm in silence.

The square and concise structure of the house could be seen through the front and back of the house at a glance. When I went in and around, I found that the emphasis was on the layout of space and lighting, natural light and ventilation, floors and beds, and all the places that could be truly felt.

It has been operating for nearly two years. The supply was not adequate to meet the demand with only three rooms. The age of guests who have stayed here ranges from 90 to 18. It was said that many local guests in Chengdu come back for a short stay sometime. It was hard to imagine that when we chatted, some high school students came down from the guest room on the second floor. They were full of youth and high spirits, and have no sense of conflict with the quiet tea room on the first floor.

There was no design language with strong concept here. However, in this impatient era, some people still intended to keep a piece of furniture they liked for more than ten years, and were still dedicated to exploring the “beauty” in the past life, combing them one by one, and then expressing the unity of things abroad, which was already charming and infectious.

Orderly When Busy, Natural When Idle
In the yard, I walked forward at random. Within ten steps, I was suddenly enlightened. A hundred meters away was a rose garden and a tavern under the trees. Within a hundred meters there was a spacious lawn, a terrace and a slide made of wood. At the end of the mini tunnel under the terrace was a small sand pit. Walking inside, there was a vegetable garden hidden. It was said that these are the surprise dishes and ingredients on the table in different seasons. *In the north of the courtyard, there is a tavern under banana trees, and in the East, there is a few hectares of rose garden. It is richly endowed by nature.

Baran is like a container with tea and meat. You can read, write, and talk with friends in the daily life. After struggling with life, we can enjoy real leisure and settle down when we are filled with our desires and needs.

The competition, the damned desire to win, and the desire to possess of the urbanites are all ignored here. What they want in daily life is nothing but comfort and contentment.
